Project title
Precision agriculture systems to support the operation of the Unified Winery Agricultural Cooperative of Samos: Plant protection and traceability applications using an integrated geographic information system (PrecWineFarm)
Implementation methodology
The infrastructure of information systems for recording plant protection practices of producers in the EEA is currently non-existent in terms of equipment, software and applications. The small size of farms and the large fragmentation of agricultural plots are also limiting factors.
The project assists the operation of the EOSC in 3 areas: (a) informing producers in real time about cultivation, plant protection, and operation actions (b) monitoring and informing producers to the EOSC about infestations and subsequent implementation of common plant protection interventions (reduction of inputs, lower costs, less burden on the environment and safety and quality of the product), long-term monitoring of infestations and correlation with climatic factors and relief (c) traceability of production to winemaking in order to reward consistent producers.
The subscription is made using an Integrated Geographic Information System, accessible via the internet and mobile devices, which consists of:
1) Geographic database PostgreSQL, for importing and extracting data on producers, agricultural plots, inputs and outputs.
2) Web GIS (WebGIS)), will be implemented specifically for the needs of the EEAS, easy to use, with open source tools. Users will monitor, store, edit, delete and search data at field and farm level.
3) Geographic Information System (desktop GIS)) for data managers.
4) Mobile application, It will aim to immediately inform producers about EEOC actions, monitor violations by producers and update the database and display it in the webGIS system, and finally, to ensure the traceability of production.
The development includes pilot operation and user training.

Innovation
The innovative elements of the proposal are:
The use of new technologies with the development of the Integrated Geographic Information System which will be accessible via the internet and will include: a) Geographic database, b) Desktop and webGIS systems, c) application for mobile devices to inform producers about EESC actions, monitoring of infestations and planning of plant protection interventions and production traceability.
The immediate information to producers of the EEAS for agricultural warnings, plant protection interventions, practices, adherence to integrated management principles and other issues.
The pilot smart label design for organic wines with traceability information (region, producers, winemaking and maturation).
The monitoring of infestations and planning of common plant protection for eudemida (Lobesia botrana) and other enemies using traps monitored by producers, updating the database using the application and viewing in the webGIS system.
Purpose & objectives
Viticulture in Samos is characterized by a unique combination of natural factors, including a variety of altitudes, slopes, relief and landscape, which affect plant protection requirements, yields per hectare and the organoleptic characteristics of wines. Small farms, which dominate the island, face significant costs of planning and managing plant protection interventions, which have a negative impact on their economic viability and affect the quality of the wine produced. On the entire island, approximately 2,000 wine farms operate, extending over an area of 11,000 hectares and producing approximately 5.5 million kilos of wine annually.
With the project we will develop precision agriculture applications for the EEAS: (a) integrated geographic information system available in real time via the internet and mobile devices to support the actions. The applications that will be developed concern: (i) plant protection, for monitoring populations of captured insects in traps placed by the EEAS, (ii) traceability of production with input-output mapping and pilot application in organic grapes and (iii) information for producers of the EEAS for plant protection, collection, etc. actions (b) user training for the use of applications and good plant protection practices.
The utilization of new technologies and innovative processes has the following objectives:
- the production of safer and healthier products,
- monitoring and reducing farm input costs,
- the documentation of cultivation/production with real-time visualization of the spatial characteristics of farms and producers' practices through the WebGIS application,
- ensuring the uniqueness of certified products, which are the wines of Samos.
Expected results
The expected results for members of the EEAS include:
(1) Long-term monitoring of attacks and display in webGIS, as well as correlation with climatic factors and relief,
(2) reduced inputs, lower costs, less environmental impact and product safety and quality for producers,
(3) monitoring of inflows and outflows,
(4) improving the functioning of the EEAS and communication and support for producers,
(5) involvement of producers in trap monitoring and sending data from traps (via app).
The problems being addressed is the difficulty of informing producers and the EOSC about infestations and plant protection, the long-term monitoring of infestations and the creation of spatiotemporal prediction models, the lack of tracking.
The opportunities that he exploits is the monitoring of inputs - outputs to proceed to the next phase of the certification of integrated wine production for members of the EOSS and the improvement of product quality. Significant benefits are expected both in terms of reducing inputs and costs, as well as in increasing added value in organic wines, a new market for the EOSS.
Operational Team Members
Laboratory of Rural Geography and Precision Agriculture Systems (PrecFarm) – University of the Aegean
PrecFarm aims at research with specialization in the study, evaluation and design of precision agricultural systems that will concern: (a) monitoring of production activity, (b) recording and analysis of environmental and abiotic characteristics of rural areas, (c) recording and analysis of inputs and outputs of agricultural holdings, (d) recording and analysis of nutrition data, plant protection with emphasis on pests and diseases of crops, for the protection of product safety and the protection of the environment and natural resources, (f) design of traceability and integrated management systems using precision agriculture practices (g) design of agri-environmental policies and land management policies. The analysis methods take into account space and time, as well as local specificities and combine quantitative and qualitative methods and a wide variety of techniques.
Unified Winemaking Agricultural Cooperative of Samos (EESS)
EOS Samos is one of the oldest cooperatives in Greece and is among the 10 largest wineries in the country. Samian wine is a key wine ambassador of Greece abroad, with exports all over the world. Today, 2,200 natural members participate in the Cooperative scheme. EOS Samos collects, vinifies and markets almost all of the island's wine production. It is constantly modernizing and investing in technology and know-how, combining them harmoniously with the tradition of viticulture and winemaking, while it has ISO and HACCP certifications.

Project financing
The PrecWineFarm project is funded by Sub-Measure 16.1-16.5 "Cooperation for environmental projects, environmental practices and actions for climate change and current environmental practices", within the framework of Action 2 "Implementation of the operational plan of the operational groups for the productivity and sustainability of agriculture" (Project Code: M16SYN2-00220). This specific action is implemented within the framework of the Rural Development Programme (RDP) of Greece 2014-2020, co-financed by the European Union - European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD).
Objective of “Measure 16 – Cooperation”
The objective of Measure 16 is to strengthen the culture of cooperation between the involved bodies with the aim of:
- Strengthening the competitiveness of businesses in primary production (agricultural farms), in the food sector, mainly local products.
- The search for new cultivation and production practices that contribute to environmental protection and adaptation to climate change.
In particular, through the collaborations that will be developed, the opportunity will be provided to utilize new technologies and innovative processes for:
- The production of safer and healthier food
- Reducing water consumption and adopting precision agriculture
- Reducing input costs
- Ensuring the uniqueness of certified agricultural products
- The utilization of by-products of agricultural production
- Highlighting the special nutritional characteristics of agricultural products
- The best integration into the food chain of Greek livestock products
