Vineyard

14,000 acres

Η area of cultivated vineyards in Samos is approximately 14,000 acres. The 98% and more of these vineyards concern the cultivation of White Muscat of Samos, one small-berry grape, which is considered the most noble clone of the large Muscat family. From this are produced the of excellent quality sweet wines with designation of origin "SAMOS"«.

The vineyards it is semi-mountainous and mountainous with soil of moderate fertility. They are generally dry, shaped like a low cup and extending throughout Samos but mainly on the slopes of Mount Ampelos, in altitude up to and the 1000 meters. The average age of Samos vineyards is 30 years, while there are also vineyards over 100 years old.

The Muscat grape is grown in "«terraces» (ancestral dry stone terraces) structured in such a way as to retain and drain the precious soil, creating successive narrow strips of land, where sometimes only one row of vines can fit. The acre yields are small and do not exceed 1,000 kilos of grapes per hectare.

The excellent soil (gravelly, shale and with great drainage capacity), combined with the microclimate favorable for viticulture and the favorable influence of the sea breeze, allow the grapes to ripen gradually, which gives them the special aromatic character and high sugars that characterize the variety. The acidic PH and rich mineral elements create a very balanced result. The annual production amounts to approximately 5.5 millions liters wine.

The king variety is the White Muscat of Samos ("muscat blanc à petits grains") or otherwise "muscovite". It is a noble grape variety, quite widespread throughout the Mediterranean. Although it is also found in other parts of Greece and the world where it also produces sweet wines, only in Samos does its best character manifest itself.

White Muscat covers 98% of the Samos vineyard. The rest is shared by wine-making red varieties, "retino", "fokiano" and "avgoustiatis".

Protected designation of origin

Samos Muscat is highly recognized worldwide and has completely identified its name with its geographical origin, as is the case with the most exquisite varieties internationally. For these reasons, Samian wine has one of the oldest registered controlled designations of origin in Europe (PDO) and is entitled to be marketed internationally only under the name "Samos".
