In central Samos, after the mountain village of Pyrgos, following a half-hour uphill route we reach altitude 711 m. on the southwestern slopes of Mount "Ambelos". The area is called by the locals  «"Muses"» and there lie some of the most impressive vineyards on the island. It is difficult to describe them unless you see them with your own eyes, in the barren lands of the area, the vines with such steep slopes that they seemed to literally hover at the top of each hill, reminiscent of eagles' nests. Some of them were as if they were praying or wanting to touch the sky...

Dry stone terraces, cup-shaped vines, old vineyards, centuries-old and autochthonous, resembling large logs. Fortunately, due to the isolated geophysical relief, phylloxera was unable to touch them in the great disaster of 1890. Slate soils that the locals call "kagies", made of a mixture of clay minerals with tiny grains of quartz, a combination that contributes to the high quality of the Muscat grape and undoubtedly characterizes the place as "blessed".

PRIMITIVE LAND, HARVEST 2022,

VINEYARD IN THE LOCATION OF MOUSAKIA

Ancient Lands of Harvest 20202

Seeing the tradition and art of viticulture passed down from generation to generation, continuing to be a model of stewardship, gives us hope for its preservation in the future. In any case, what you feel in these historic vineyards is the power and energy of nature, an eternal reality, which existed and will continue to exist. And this is truly a unique feeling. Somewhere in the panting of the altitude and the steep slopes, we stop for a moment to take a breath and understand what is happening around us. We realize the value of people, like these young children who took over the baton of the winegrower and decided to dedicate their lives to preserving centuries-old traditions and values. This mountainous tour continued through an area where vineyards surround you from all sides and we become partakers of the greatest ritual since ancient times, that of the grape harvest. «Good wine,» the old people said, «is made in the vineyard,» and they were absolutely right. Wine has the flavor of the vineyard, the terroir, this makes the difference, it sculpts the characteristics of the wine, it shapes it.
